Mayweather: Me fighting Guerrero is just a rumor; not sure who I’ll fight

floyd545By Chris Williams: Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. cleared up some confusion about his May 4th fight date by saying he’s still not sure who he’ll be facing next for that date.

Mayweather Jr. said on his twitter “As of right now I don’t know who I’m fighting on May 4th. Me fighting Roberto Guerrero is just a rumor.”

Boxing fans have been assuming that Floyd will be fighting Guerrero for some reason, perhaps mostly because he’s Mayweather’s mandatory, he’s Mexican, and Mayweather Jr. has chosen to fight on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo.

Since few fans believe Mayweather will opt to fight the tougher WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on this fight date, it’s been assumed for a long time that Guerrero, the arguably softer target, would get the fight with Mayweather by default.

If it’s not going to be Guerrero then it’ll likely be Canelo, since Mayweather Jr. isn’t going to take a no named fighter in a big pay per view card. He’s not going to make that mistake. The only logical choices for Mayweather to take is for him to fight a well known Mexican fighter. Guerrero obviously falls short in terms of being well known to casual boxing fans, but he is Mexican and that might be enough for a Mayweather-Guerrero fight to do well if he gets selected.

If Mayweather chooses not fight Alvarez or Guerrero then his choices for Mexican opponents are probably down to these guys:

* Daniel Sandoval
* Jessie Vargas
* Jorge Paez Jr
* Josesito Lopez

Those are the only welterweight contenders with a Mexican background, although some of them are from the United States. I think Mayweather will take a lot of heat if he faces of them because they’re just not well known enough to fight him.

Mayweather can always pick someone from the light welterweight or the junior middleweight division if he can’t find someone he’s interested in facing from the 147 pound division. Brandon Rios, a light welterweight, would be a good choice if Bob Arum would let Rios take the fight with Mayweather. The choices at 154 are not very good for Mayweather. He could fight Carlos Molina, Roberto Garcia, Alfredo Angulo
