Malignaggi doesn’t rule out Mosley fight

By Dan Ambrose: Earlier tonight, when asked if he was still going to be fighting 41-year-old Shane Mosley, WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi said “We’ll see, we’ll see, a lot of talking going on.”

Why would Malignaggi say that if he’s not interested in the fight? When Malignaggi was asked if he was going to be still fighting Mosley, Malignaggi had the perfect opportunity to say no and explain why the fight wasn’t going to happen, but instead he said “we’ll see.” That doesn’t exactly sound like a fighter who doesn’t want to face a fading fighter like Mosley, does it?

It looks like Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Malignaggi, haven’t completely shut the door on the Malignaggi-Mosley fight. That’s not surprising because the other fighters mentioned as possibilities for Malignaggi’s next fight – Marcos Maidana, Diego Chavez and Andre Berto – are all guys that would have a good chance of beating him. But more importantly than that, it’s doubtful that any of them would draw well in Brooklyn, New York, which is where Malignaggi will be fighting on April 27th at the Barclays Center.

While Mosley may be pretty much a shot fighter, he’s still more popular than Maidana, Diego Chavez and Berto. That’s probably why the door hasn’t been completely shut on the Mosley fight. It’s about business and Mosley is still a name that casual boxing fans recognize. From Golden Boy’s perspective, they could get at least one good fight out of Mosley if he beats Malignaggi. They could then look to have Mosley defend his title against one of the top fighters, possibly even Amir Khan, and that fight would probably draw well.

Mosley hasn’t won a fight in four years, and he’s the only fighter that Malignaggi would have a chance of beating among the aforementioned names. Without a doubt, Chavez, Berto and Maidana would be a big headache for the light hitting Malignaggi and Golden Boy has to know this.
