Kieran Farrell: The Sad News

By Rusty Nat: Being a British writer I probably tend to show more interest in the little known British fighters as well as the big names of the sport.

Today for me was a sad day to hear that Kieran Farrell has been forced to retire from the sport due to severe brain damage.

For the American fans and other Europeans reading this you may never had heard of Farrell and that’s not surprising considering he was only 22 years old with a record of 14-1 in the pro ranks at lightweight and had not fought for a major title.

Farrell made a winning start to his pro career with 13 straight wins and no defeats. He captured the Central Area Title against another unbeaten Brit in Joe Elfidh in June of last year and was steadily making his way through the domestic ranks.

In December he came up against Anthony Crolla a fighter with vastly more experience than Farrell for the English Lightweight Title.

This was a great domestic fight to watch that went all 10 rounds where Crolla was given the nod on a UD.

Sadly Farrell collapsed following the contest and was stretchered from the ring.

Following his treatment and recovery to the point that he is back to normal Farrell was sadly told that he will never box again.

He wrote on his personal Twitter account…

“Dr Hewitt confirmed my worst fears today. I will never box again, the next punch to my head could be fatal & the BBBofC (British Boxing Board of Control) wouldn’t licence me,”

“I asked if I had a 4year long break would I be able to box? He told me I have long term brain damage, once its damaged it won’t mend.”

“I was expecting the worst but it’s worse when it’s told to you, I’m heart broke.”

It’s awesome news that Kieran is recovered to the point that he can effectively lead a normal life with no disabilities but he will also have to now decide what he wishes to do when boxing is not an option yet probably all he has ever known how to do and wanted to do.

This story just got me thinking how we take for granted the fighters we follow, love and admire. Everyone is human and this sort of thing can happen at any time.

As fans we have a tendency to moan and complain about one fighter dodging another, or the money split arguments and so on! But ultimately we should all be giving massive praise for every fighter that ever braves the ring and risks literally everything for the sake of our entertainment!

Are you a “Froid Maynever Fan” or if your a “Pactard” fan?

Maybe you think the Klitschko’s are boring as hell or the best that ever lived!

Do you think Broner is a great prospect or a cheap imitation?

What ever your preference, every one of these guys is only ever one punch away from losing everything, lets show the respect they deserve!

It was great to watch you Kieran, it’s a sad story that you are unable to fight again before you reached your potential. Treasure everyday that life goes on buddy! Thank you
