By Dan Ambrose: It’s really difficult to take seriously the upcoming February 9th fight between WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16 KO’s) and 35-year-old Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KO’s). It seems like the only reason Judah was picked for this fight was as a marketing gimmick because he’s well known to casual fans, and he’s popular in the Brooklyn, New York area, which is where the fight will be staged.
That’s pretty much the only reason I can see why Judah was given the fight by Golden Boy Promotions, that and because he’s arguably much less of a threat than the guy Garcia should be fighting right now interim WBC light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse.
Yes, I know Judah has a so-called win over Matthysse from two years ago but that was a highly controversial decision loss and I don’t agree with the decision at all. I had Matthysse winning fight going away, and he’s gotten a lot better since then and Judah has gotten worse.
It just seems kind of superficial to see a fighter picked because he’s better known than other fighters but not better than them. I think it’s bad for the sport to have fights selected in this manner.
Judah looked horrible in getting stopped by Amir Khan in a 5th round TKO two fights ago, and it’s pretty surprising that all it took for Judah get a title shot against Danny Garcia was to beat Vernon Paris.
I think Garcia is an excellent fighter but I don’t think he’s as good as his record shows. He’s vulnerable to fighters that know how to box and can avoid getting close enough for Garcia to land his big left hook. That’s really Garcia’s only weapon that sets him apart from other fighters. His right hand isn’t out of this world, and his jab is nothing special at all. He’s a good fighter but I think he would have a lot of problems against the likes of Matthysse, Lamont Peterson, Brandon Rios, and I see Amir Khan possibly beating him in the rematch if he stays on the outside.
