Is Sergio ducking Gennady Golovkin?

martinez2By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez has shown no interest in moving up to the super middleweight division nor has he shown any interest in unifying is own division. However, he is interested in fighting welter weight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. The part that baffles me is fight fans claim that if Floyd doesn’t take the fight that he’s ducking. A few points before I move on.

Floyd is a welterweight and he stretches himself when he does fight at junior middleweight. For his fights against Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto, he only tipped the scale at 150 pounds. Sergio is a middleweight who claims he get down to 154 pounds and even 150 pounds to make the fight happen. 154 is a stretch and 150 is impossible. Moreover, he’s a MIDDLEWEIGHT. He is naturally bigger than Floyd and would be a super middle weight on fight night. How about fighting WBA champ Gennady Golovkin?

There should be nothing keeping this fight from happening. Both fighters are 5ft 10inches and are both in the same weight class. I’m pretty sure HBO would pick up the fight especially with both coming off impressive wins. Martinez has a fight coming up against Martin Murray in Argentina on April 27th and is seeking a rematch against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in September. That fight shouldn’t even happen because it was a lop sided win in favor of Martinez.

In my humble opinion, Team Martinez won’t even pursue that fight. There is too much risk. Gennady’s or triple G, pressure style would certainly present problems for Martinez who fights with his hands down. Martinez isn’t even interested in fighting Dmitry Pirog or Daniel Geale. Now most might say these fighters pose a risk, but don’t have financial reward attached to them. But what does Sergio bring to the table financially when it comes to fighting Floyd? What I do find interesting is that Golovkin is reportedly wanting to fight Andre Ward something else Sergio has no interest in.

What I also find interesting is that triple G is as I stated above is only 5ft 10inches and is willing to move up to get big fights. He believes his style would give super middleweights some trouble. This let’s me know that the “too small” excuse that Sergio’s adviser Sampson Lewkowicz gave is just that; an excuse. There is no shame in Martinez saying he wants to fight Mayweather because Money May is a huge draw. So why not just say that instead of giving all these excuses about not fighting in the 168 division or cleaning out his division. Is it safe to say that Sergio is ducking triple G or no?
