By Scott Gilfoid: David Haye sees British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price as being the better fighter compared to Tyson Fury, and he’s not sure how good Fury really is after seeing him struggle against John McDermott in the past. Haye believes Price would knock Fury out if they were to fight right now.
Haye said to the Manchester Evenings News “I think David Price is No 1, ahead of Tyson Fury. The way he handled him comfortably in the amateurs…The fact that Fury relinquished his titles rather than fight Price shows what the pecking order is…I think Price would stop him.”
Frankly speaking, I think both Fury and Price are flawed as heck. Both of them have looked bad when hit hard, and I can’t see either of them standing up to a major puncher in the heavyweight division. The 6’8” Price hasn’t faced one puncher during his five year pro career, and the last time he fought anyone with power was in 2008 when he was stopped in the Olympics by Robert Cammarelle.
It’s hard to believe that Price has been maneuvered around big punchers for his entire career, but that’s what’s happened. Sooner or later, I see Price having his Cammarelle moment once again. I mean, you can’t keep Price away from guys with power his entire career without boxing fans wondering what’s going.
Fury hasn’t faced any punchers either, and he’s been hurt by some of the weak opposition he’s been in with. That’s not a good sign when you’ve got a heavyweight getting hurt by 2nd tier opposition. Fury lacks power and he’s pretty much just a big slapper.
I think Haye is correct about Price being a level above Fury. I don’t see how Fury would come out ahead against Price because of the power difference.
The only way Fury could beat Price would be to slap his way to a 12 round decision, but the problem is he’d have to take 12 rounds of really hard shots from Price to do that. It would be extremely difficult for Fury to take 12 rounds of left hooks and right hands from Price without getting knocked out. If Fury had the power to do to Price what Cammarelle did, then it wouldn’t be a problem, but Fury is just a slapper, so he’d be in for a world of hurt if and when he faces Price.
