guerrero223By Chris Williams: The May 4th fight between Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is reportedly close to being done, according to Guerrero’s manager Luis De Cubas Jr.

De Cubas Jr. said to the record.com.mx “We are in the final process of closing…talks are going well and it seems that everything is on track. In two weeks we’ll have a final decision. We have worked hard to put Robert in the limelight for the Mayweather fight. The difference between Guerrero and Canelo [Saul Alvarez] is that Robert has earned his place.”

Ouch! De Cubas Jr. is taking a shot at Canelo’s soft match-making against welterweights and light welterweights instead of the top junior middleweights from his own division. Canelo, however, remains a much more popular fighter in Mexico and arguably even in the United States than Guerrero despite having achieved far less with his career thus far.

It goes to show you that it’s not what Alvarez has achieved it’s the hype surrounding his fights. Canelo hasn’t been in any real exciting fights yet because he’s still be put in with over-matched smaller opposition, but his boxing fans in Mexico really think high of him.

Guerrero has definitely earned the shot at fighting Mayweather by defeating the unbeaten Selcuk Aydin and dominating Andre Berto by a pretty one-sided fight last year. Those wins at welterweight against top contenders have showed that Guerrero not only belongs at 147, but that he’s one of the best fighters at that weight.

Whether he’s better than Mayweather remains to be seen. If you’d have asked that question four years ago people would have laughed at you, but after watching Mayweather have problems in his last fight against a limited Miguel Cotto, it’s hard to know if Mayweather can beat a fighter like Guerrero. I think it’s going to be a lot tougher fight than many boxing fans realize.
