Golden Boy are showing a consistency in protecting their fighters

alvarez43By Dominic Sauboorah: Golden Boy Promotions is arguably the biggest boxing promotional company in the world; however they seem to be protecting a lot of their “well known” fighters, whereby they haven’t been fighting top contenders or world champions but instead fringe contenders who have been served up on a silver platter.

Saul Alvarez is a perfect example. Golden Boy rate him as one of the best pound for pound, but his resume is absolutely appalling. He’s fought welterweights Matthew Hatton, Josesito Lopez and Alfonso Gomez when he’s defending a 154 belt, and the only real legit contender he’s fought that’s natural at his weight is Ryan Rhodes, who’s nothing more than a European level fighter. The fact that this guy’s calling Mayweather out is a disgrace and the fact that he holds one of the most prestigious boxing belts in the world is a disgrace. The guy is not even at world class yet as he’s not proven. I’d like to see him fight Austin Trout, because I can imagine Trout boxing him to pieces left right and centre.

Another example could be Deontay Wilder. He’s also been hyped up to be the next great American heavyweight. His record may suggest as to why considering he’s knocked all of his opponents out; however he’s fought heavyweights who aren’t even ranked in the top 50. I mean the guy’s barely a domestic level fighter let alone international or dare I say world. His technique is generally all over the place, his jab is sloppy, the only thing he has going for him is his booming right hand which in my opinion is no more powerful than David Price’s.

A final example could be Danny Garcia. The guy has come off of a destructive knockout win over Amir Khan and was a huge underdog, even by Golden Boy, going into the fight. However he’s now set to face an over the hill Zab Judah? It just doesn’t make sense. A fight with Lucas Matthysse would make a lot more sense considering the fact that the guy’s knocking everyone out left right and centre and holds the WBC interim champion, thereby technically making him Garcia’s mandatory. Garcia will be the overwhelming favourite going into the fight with Judah and without much surprise considering Judah got out boxed by Amir Khan.

Golden Boy really are slacking when it comes to putting their fighters in with real tough opposition. If this trend continues they’ll end up being seen as nothing more than a paper company who want to make as much money as they can from their main fighters by putting them in with fighters who are pretty much lambs dressed for the slaughter. I know boxing is a business, but that’s only due to the fans and Golden Boy are not giving the fans what they want.
