Floyd Mayweather’s decline; Guerrero is the perfect fight.

guerrero11By Rusty Nate: I know the title alone will probably spawn a long line of posters to start blasting away with comments claiming Floyd is great and won’t ever be beaten by anyone but lets be honest when we discuss it.

Floyd has been on the slide. Weather you like it or not the legendary fighter is pushing 36 years of age. In a weight class where speed, reflexes and stamina play a massive roll in who’s wins and who loses, Floyd is getting to that stage where he is going to find himself unable to compete on a winning basis with the best of the sport.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Floyd from a boxing point of view is of course one of the greats and at present (or based on his last performance) he is still able to use his ring genius to beat fighters such as Miguel Cotto.

The problem I foresee is that with his huge spells of inactivity coupled with his age and naturally declining attributes he won’t be able to hold his position much longer.

When thinking about his latest form against Cotto. It was a good fight and Floyd clearly commanded the action and won the fight outright but he did take shots with more regularity than he has done in the past with possibly the exception of the Castillo fights.

At the moment he is lined up to fight Guerrero on May 4th which is not the fight that the fans wanted to see him in however there is talk of a potential September battle with Canelo Alvarez.

Now I am not going to judge or predict an outcome of a Mayweather-Alvarez fight before the May 4th date has happened.

What I think makes Guerrero a great choice of opponent for Mayweather is that after such a long spell of inactivity Mayweather needs to know if he has enough left in order to mix it with Alvarez. I don’t see Floyd losing to Guerrero but what I do see is a 12 round fight with Guerrero pushing forward consistently through the full 12 rounds and putting a lot of pressure on the aging great!

This will be a great marker for Floyd and I completely believe that if we see a further decline from his last fight then it could well be that the Cotto fight was the last time we see him tackle a huge name at the top of the sport.

Fighting for money is obviously Floyds greatest passion and so he may well fight past May 4th regardless but it’s also clear that the O in his record also means a lot to him. If he struggles against Guerrero to a UD victory then would he really risk his record in order to fight someone like Alvarez who is physically stronger and packs more of a punch? I personally don’t think so.

Either way May 4th should be very interesting to watch and could well shape the remainder of Floyd’s career.
