Donaire unhappy with Golden Boy’s $3 mil contract for Mares fight

donaire23 - CopyBy Chris Williams: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire is unhappy with the quite generous $3 million contract that Golden Boy Promotions sent over to his team for a unification fight against Golden Boy fighter WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares.

Donaire specifically is unhappy that the contract didn’t include a date for the fight, no site, no gloves, no rounds, and without the liability information. In other words, it was a skeleton contract with a straight $3 million offer for the fight. I don’t see what the big deal is. Either Donaire agrees to take the fight or he doesn’t. They can work with Golden Boy to fill in the other areas.

Here’s what Donaire had to say about the contract on his twitter: “Dunkin doesnt waste my time with bullcrap “letters” he only calls me for real offers. I invite @goldenboyboxing to really make their lawyers work and create a real contract n not sm no site no date no rounds gloves bs. ALL it said was Donaire for $3mil. No site, no date, no rounds, no liability for GBP if they pull out. What kind of contract was that?! Ok I called Dunkin and he gave me an update. He said they didn’t bother bc Todd told him the lawyers said it was a LETTER w/ no details.”

I don’t know why Donaire is getting all upset. Obviously, Golden Boy left all of these items open for negotiation. If you look at the recent interviews by Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya, they were willing to give Donaire and Top Rank almost anything that they want just to get the fight done. As such, if they left those items out of the contract then what likely doing is trying to avoid areas where the fight can be dismissed by Bob Arum for something they don’t like in the contract.

Instead of getting heated about it, Donaire should have his manager and promoter work with Golden Boy to fill in those areas because I don’t think Golden Boy left these areas out in order to play games. They just seem like they’re to avoid any areas of disagreement.
