Deontay Wilder continues to talk and talk and talk

By Dominic Sauboorah: Wow, this is starting to annoy me. After unbeaten heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (27-0. 27 KO’s) was criticized for fighting journeyman Matt Greer last Saturday night in Mexico, he doesn’t end up being the bigger man and admitting that he hasn’t been fighting good enough opposition and that he needs stepping up. Instead he stays in denial about it stating how he’s achieved more than his haters. I’m sorry, what exactly have you achieved in the pro ranks, Deontay? Because after 27 you’re not even in the top 100 yet you’re calling guys out from the top 20.

Wilder continues to talk and talk and talk but doesn’t back it up. He’s like Floyd Mayweather except Mayweather backs it up, Wilder doesn’t. He looked lethargic and amateurish in his win over Matt Greer when, in reality, if he’s as strong and powerful as he claims to be he would’ve been able to take out Greer in the first minute of the fight. Instead he looked atrocious with his punches swinging all over the place.

Tyson Fury even stated how Wilder fights “bums”. I believe Fury needs to fight someone like Robert Helenius or Chris Arreola before he gets a shot at the Klitschkos; however, at least he’s beaten much better opposition than Wilder, who’s fighting guys ranked in the top 300.

Wilder never seems to learn. He can continue to mouth off or he can step up and prove us all wrong by beating a reasonably well known heavyweight in the top 20 or 30 and there’s no reason for him not to as he’s clearly confident in his abilities but in reality he really shouldn’t be. He continues to be criticized as he continues to fight bum after bum so the criticism is deserved.

Wilder has been praised for his solid record when that means nothing considering he’s fought no one that you can call a genuine threat. The guy is disappointing thus far and his behavior emphasizes that, as he seems reluctant to help himself to become a legitimate prospect in the heavyweight division. You want to gain respect, Deontay? Start fighting real fighters who are willing to fight!
