alvarado2By Ryan Wardle: A rematch of one of last year’s most scintillating fights is rumored to be in the works. Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) vs. Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) II is allegedly set for a tentative date of March 30th. Brandon Rios earned a seventh round stoppage, last October, in a fight that was filled with excitement from start to finish, and the proposed rematch is expected to have no less action than the first.

In the first bout both fighters went toe to toe for the better part of seven rounds. Rios was eventually able to connect with a hard right hand that staggered Alvarado, Rios then followed it up with a combination of punches while Alvarado was on the ropes. Referee Pat Russell then stepped in and put a stop to the bout with Alvarado still on his feet. At the time of the stoppage two of the three judges had the bout scored even 57-57, with one judge having the bout scored 58-56 in favor of Rios.

Alvarado seemed to be the bigger man as this was Rios first fight at junior welterweight, and he also has a reach advantage on the shorter Rios. Alvarado demonstrated success when working behind his jab and trying to keep the fight at a manageable distance. He has the ability to fight on the inside but seemed to overstay his welcome, as inside fighting is Rios most notable skill. He stands a better chance on the scorecards and against Rios brawling style, if he uses his jab to set up the right hand as he successfully did in the first fight. The fight will inevitably be drawn to the inside where Alvarado can do damage, but in moderation, as it would benefit him to bounce back outside and fight behind his jab.

If this fight gets made and is officially announced boxing fans can surely look to another barn-burner. Both fighters have the will to win and Alvarado will be looking to avenge his sole loss. There is no doubt this fight will promise another night of head snapping blows and is surely a fight many fans are excited to see.
