Burns vs. Vazquez: Ricky is going to look bad in this fight

burns3By Scott Gilfoid: I really hope the judges get the decision right for the March 16th fight between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) and IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) because they won’t be doing anyone any favors if they mess up the scoring and give the loser the victory.

The fight will be taking place at the Wembley Arena in London, England, and that means the 29-year-old Burns will have the hometown advantage. Yes, I know he’s from Scotland, but that’s the UK, and Scotland is just a stone’s throw away from London, so you can pretty much call Burns the hometown fighter.

It’s not like with the 26-year-old Vazquez, who is coming over 5000 miles away from his home country of Mexico for this fight. Okay, so it’s going to be Burns who will have the UK fans on his side in this fight.

What this means is that when Vazquez is clowning him, and boxing circles around him all night long, we’ll hear Burns’ fans screaming for every missed punch that Burns throws, and you can expect the screaming to possibly confuse the judges into thinking Burns is actually landing and doing well in the fight. But believe me; he’s not going to do well in this one.

I see Vazquez making Burns look like an ape in this fight by boxing him, using his reach, movement and talent to avoid Burns’ attempts at roughing him up inside. A big part of Burns’ game is his tendency to try and rough up his opponents on the inside.

Burns likes to get in close, land his shots and then rough up and/or clinch and hold to shut them down so they can’t throw punches back. It takes a strong fighter to be able to get out of Burns’ clinches and nail him.

With Vazquez, he’s not going to be there for Burns to use any of his rough stuff because he’s going to stay on the move and continually pepper him with hard shots on the move. Burns won’t know which way Vazquez is coming from because he’ll have Burns dizzy from his movement.
