Broner-Rees: Adrien will send a message with his slaughter of Gavin

broner451By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns didn’t agree to take the fight with the talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) but that’s okay because Broner will be looking to send a clear message to Burns on February 16th when he destroys the Welsh fighter Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) in their fight at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

I suspect that if Burns had any thoughts of taking on Broner in 2013, he’ll forget those plans after watching what Broner does to Rees. It’s going to be painful, brutal and short with Rees taking a terrible beating and likely left on the canvas in a woeful state.

It’s just too bad that Burns didn’t step up to the plate and take the fight because Broner wants to quickly clean out the lightweight division of the little bit of talent that the division holds. It’s pretty slim scrapings I’ve got to say and I honestly don’t see any upside to Broner destroying Rees and wasting time trying to get Burns to man up and take the fight. I’d cut my losses and move on after the Rees demolition job if I was Broner.

Okay, so Rees is pretty short, pretty slow and pretty weak. He’s not fought anyone good in ages. I don’t know why, and I always wondered what happened with him for him to stop fighting good opposition after he got smashed by Andriy Kotelnik I 2008. I guess Rees got content with facing 2nd tier opposition in the UK. I don’t know why he never stepped up for four years because those years were pretty thrown away by Rees.

Rees should have forgot completely about fighting domestic level opposition when he briefly held the WBA Word light welterweight title, but instead Rees regressed with his career, going backwards after his loss to Kotelnik. It’s good that he’s finally getting back with it against Broner, but I think it’s WAY too late now. Rees might have been able to pick up a world level strap between 2008 and 2011, but I think the lightweight division has passed him by now and I don’t see him capable of winning a title at this point.
