Austin Trout vs. Canelo Alvarez “close” for May 4th

trout234By Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) says he and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) could be fighting on May 4th on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Trout said to the elpasotimes.co “Hopefully, we get the Canelo fight done. It’s looking good. I think it’s close.”

If this fight can happen it’ll give Alvarez a chance to try and avenge his brother Rigoberto Alvarez’s defeat to Trout from two years ago when Trout beat Rigoberto by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in February 2011. After Trout beat Miguel Cotto recently, he mentioned the reasons why Canelo should fight him and one of the reasons was so that he could try and avenge his brother’s loss.

However, Trout doubted that Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy would allow him to fight Trout, because he felt that Golden Boy would look to try and protect their “Golden Goose” so that he didn’t get beaten by Trout before he started laying golden eggs for them.

I’ll be really surprised if the Trout-Alvarez fight gets made because Alvarez is so limited in terms of footwork, speed, reach and boxing ability. Alvarez is basically a smaller version of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, but instead of fighting smaller middleweights after rehydrating up to 180 lbs the way that Chavez Jr. tends to do when he fights, Alvarez faces a lot of welterweights despite holding down the junior middleweight World Boxing Council title. That gives Alvarez and automatic size advantage against his opposition. If he fights Trout, he’ll be facing a real junior middleweight and I see it going badly for Alvarez.

Golden Boy wanted Alvarez to fight Miguel Cotto on May 4th, but Trout ruined those plans by pulling off a minor upset in beating Cotto last month by a 12 round decision in December.
