Austin Trout: I haven’t been contacted for Saul Alvarez fight

trout35By Dan Ambrose: In a sign that Golden Boy Promotions might be looking elsewhere for easier marks for their Golden One, WBA World junior middleweight Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) says he hasn’t even been contacted by the promoters of WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) for a fight on May 4th. Trout says he’s hoping they’ll contact him about the fight but he’s not going to just sit around waiting.

Trout said to ESPN.com “You’re going to have to ask Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo because Team Trout is ready and waiting on the call to say Canelo is ready to do it as well. If it doesn’t happen, we’re not going to wait though. Sooner or later he [Canelo] is going to have to fight me. I’m a champion. I’m going to take the other belts that are not his belt, and there will be nothing left to do but to get in and fight. It’ll happen sooner or later, God’s will. No, [I haven’t been contacted by Golden Boy] not yet. I don’t know how far or how close they are to making it happen.”

The fact that Trout hasn’t been contacted yet might not be a big deal because it’s still only January and the fight isn’t until May 4th. Golden Boy is trying to get Alvarez to commit to the May 4th card, and according to figthnews.com, Alvarez wants assurances that he can get a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 14th as part of the agreement to fight on the May 4th card.

It’s going to be interesting to see if Trout is selected by Golden Boy to take the fight because he was skeptical about it recently, calling Canelo the “Golden Goose” for Golden Boy Promotions.

I don’t agree that Canelo has to fight Trout sooner or later. I can see a scenario where he never faces him. He’s not fought Vanes Martirosyan, Erislandy Lara and Cornelius Bundrage despite the fact that these guys have been some of the top fighters in the junior middleweight division for the past couple of years. When you see Alvarez facing guys like light welterweight Josesito Lopez, 40-year-old Shane Mosley, welterweight Matthew Hatton, welterweight Alfonso Gomez and welterweight Kermit Cintron, it makes you wonder what’s going on with the matchmaking for Canelo. He seems to be fighting everyone but the guys that he should be fighting at 154.
