Alexander’s trainer wants Mosley next after Kell Brook fight

mosley3334By Dan Ambrose: Kevin Cunningham, the trainer for IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s), likes the idea of Alexander facing 41-year-old Shane Mosley if Alexander is able to successfully defend his title next month against unbeaten challenger Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) on February 23rd in Detroit, Michigan.

Cunningham told ringtv “Why not Shane?…We would love to oblige Shane with a shot at Devon’s IBF title. We would like to extend an invitation to Shane to come on out to Detroit on February 23rd and to sit at ringside for out fight.”

Mosley was supposed to be getting an arguably undeserved title shot against WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi on April 27th, but the fight negotiations crumbled due to financial reasons. Now it looks like Mosley could possibly get a shot at a title if Alexander gets past Brook in their fight next month.

One question that you have to ask is what will the International Boxing Federation say about Alexander fighting Mosley when he hasn’t won a fight in four years and isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies. Will the IBF allow Alexander to face Mosley while skipping over the top 15 contenders in the division? It’s food for thought.

When you see stuff like this going on in boxing it’s really disappointing because it turns the sport into a popularity contest rather than athletics. The only reason you could think of for Mosley being given a shot at Alexander’s title is because Mosley is better known than the top 15 contenders the IBF has ranked. But there needs to be some of standard for when a non-active, non-ranked fighter like Mosley can fight for a title because it makes it too easy for champions to pick and choose who they want to fight and milk their titles this way.
