Will Saul Alvarez duck Austin Trout for his next fight?

trout7By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be back in the ring on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada but it won’t be against his desired opponent Floyd Mayweather Jr, because he’s going to be facing Robert “The Ghost”Guerrero in the main event on that card.

Alvarez will be the co-main event against an opponent still to be determined. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that this could be the biggest pay per view fight in the history of the sport, meaning that he must have someone really good that he’ll be matching Canelo with because it’ll take more than just putting Canelo on the undercard against some unknown fighter for the card to break records.

I wish I could say that Alvarez will be facing WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout because Trout recently showed that he’s one of the best fighters in the 154 pound division when he dominated Miguel Cotto by a 12 round unanimous decision earlier this month. Alvarez said recently that he wants the Mayweather fight but if he couldn’t get him then he’d consider facing Trout. However, Alvarez stopped short of saying that he’ll face him, as he says there are other options for him to fight.

The other option obviously is the beaten Cotto. He’s one of the big three names that Alvarez insisted that Golden Boy get for his next fight on May 4th. I don’t know if Cotto is all that interested in taking this fight right now given how badly he was beaten by Trout, but I bet if Golden Boy Promotions throws enough money at him he’ll take the fight.

My guess is it’ll take at least $3 million to get Cotto to accept a fight with Alvarez because he’s not going to take this fight for chump change. Cotto can get a lot more than that if he stays busy and waits for Manny Pacquiao to free himself from his Juan Manuel Marquez rematch cycle.

If Cotto gets the fight with Alvarez then you’ll know that Alvarez and Golden Boy didn’t want to take Trout as an opponent due to his ability to out-box his opponents and make them look silly. Alvarez is only 22, and he fights like he’s been brought up facing guys that stand in a phone booth to fight him. He doesn’t handle movement well at all as we saw in his fight with Shane Mosley.
