Will Golden Boy drop Khan if he loses to Molina on Saturday night?

Image: Will Golden Boy drop Khan if he loses to Molina on Saturday night?By William Mackay: Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) is in a dire situation right now coming into his fight this Saturday night against Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) on Showtime at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California. Khan, 26, can’t afford to lose again because that would be his third consecutive loss for him. Despite those two straight losses, Khans promoters at Golden Boy had enough faith in him to put him in the main event on this card.

However, if Khan loses this fight too it might be time for Golden Boy to consider letting Khan go, because you can’t really keep pushing a fighter that has his last three fights. To be sure, Golden Boy can keep Khan on their payroll as a gatekeeper/journeyman level guy, but you can’t really continue to push someone that is losing every time out even when you try to find weak opposition for him like Molina.

I don’t expect Khan to lose to Molina, but if he does lose and if he gets knocked out in losing, then Golden Boy really needs to think seriously about dumping Khan and looking in another direction for a fighter they can build into a pay per view attraction at 140 or 147. Golden Boy already has one guy that could be a future PPV star in 23-year-old Adrien Broner, who could make it to that level once he moves up to 140 and 147. But Khan is a guy that Golden Boy is still hoping can pan out for them in the near future with the help of his new trainer Virgil Hunter of Oakland, California.

Hunter has been raving about how good Khan has been looking in training camp for the Molina fight, but then again Khan’s previous trainer Freddie Roach was the same way when he was training Khan. Roach liked what he saw in Khan during training, but it was during the fights that Khan would fall apart. Khan did well when he was being matched against guys that couldn’t punch like Paulie Malignaggi and Paul McCloskey, but when Khan faced guys that could punch like Breidis Prescott, Danny Garcia and Marcos Maidna, Khan had problems.
