Will Burns duck Broner in 2013?

duck4By Scott Gilfoid: We’ve heard recently how WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’s promoter Frank Warren says he’s interested in having Burns fight WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner in 2013. It sounds good but I think the reality is we may not see that happen in 2013, and Broner isn’t going to wait around for the rest of his life waiting for Burns to get with it and accepting the fight.

Right now Broner is clearly the best fighter in the lightweight division and he’s got the less talented fighters running scared not wanting to take him on for fear of getting thrashed in royal fashion. Burns would be out of his class if he were to accept a fight with Broner, so I expect to see Burns come up with some kind of way of getting out of the fight.

Here’s how I see Burns avoiding a fight with Broner in 2013:

• Pricing himself out by asking for too much money
• Saying he doesn’t want to fight in the United States
• Moving up in weight one again
• Scheduling another opponent for Broner’s next open fight date

I see Burns ducking the fight by using a combination of pricing himself out of the fight, saying he won’t take the fight unless Broner comes to fight him in Scotland and then scheduling another opponent quickly while negotiations are still underway. Broner obviously won’t agree to fight Burns in Scotland, and why should he? Broner is the one with the talent and the one that boxing fans worldwide consider to be the best fighter in the division. He’s not going to come to another fighters’ own country when he’s not in the same league as him in terms of talent.

I’m not sure if Burns will be able to hold onto his World Boxing Organization title for very much longer even if he does avoid a fight with the talented Broner. Burns might as well take the fight and get a big payday, because once he gets beaten by someone like Gonzalez then any chance of a future fight with Broner is down the drain.
