Trout: I’ll fight Cotto again if there’s any doubt about the decision

Image: Trout: I'll fight Cotto again if there's any doubt about the decisionBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) says he’ll give Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) an immediate rematch if Cotto wants it or if boxing fans question who results of his 12 round decision win over Cotto last Saturday night in New York.

Trout won by a 12 round unanimous decisions by the scores of 119-109, 117-111 and 117-111. Thus far, few fans have questioned the results of the fight, and Cotto hasn’t been vocal about wanting to fight Trout again despite his unhappiness with the wide scores.

Trout said after the fight “I knew some of the rounds were close, but I felt I pulled out a lot of the close rounds. If there is any doubt that I won the fight, I’m all for a rematch.”

I think it’s probably unlikely that Cotto will be looking to fight Trout anytime soon, if ever. I think Cotto got a lifetimes worth of Trout last Saturday night, and I don’t expect Cotto to push for a rematch. He was unhappy with the scores of the fight, but I’m sure after watching the fight on replay, Cotto has to know who the better man was in the fight and wasn’t him.

The boxing public aren’t going to push for a Cotto-Trout rematch because it was too one-sided for fans to want to see it a second time.

The fight we’re likely going to see is Cotto matched up against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer already mentioned wanting to put this fight together next, and if he’s talking about it now it’s likely that’s the fight he’s going to make. Schaefer’s problem is that Alvarez has already said in no uncertain terms that he wants Cotto, Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Sergio Martinez next. Martinez and Mayweather are showing no interest in taking that fight. That just leaves Cotto.

Golden Boy wants to keep Alvarez happy, so we’re probably going to see a big effort made by Schaefer to get Cotto to fight Alvarez next. It’s obviously going to look strange to boxing fans because Trout should be the one that’s getting the fight with Alvarez. However, Alvarez wants a big name and Cotto is one of the guys that he’s mentioned wanting. It’ll be up to Alvarez to decide whether he still wants to fight Cotto or not after watching him lose. If Alvarez decides he still wants Cotto rather than Trout it’s going to look really bad.
