Thomas Dulorme to try his luck at light welterweight

dulorme3By Dan Ambrose: Having miserably failed when he attempted to step it up a class at welterweight in his 7th round knockout loss to Luis Carlos Abregu last October, Puerto Rican Thomas Dulorme (16-1, 12 KO’s) will be looking to slowly ease his way into the light welterweight division to see if he can find better success at that weight class.

According to Fightnews.com, the 22-year-old Dulorme plans on fighting his next fight at 143 pounds in February to see how he feels at the lower weight, and then if he doesn’t okay he’ll move all the way down to 140 to campaign as a light welterweight.

Needless to say, the 5’10” Dulorme’s chances of success at 140 are slim and none. He’s too tall and too big to be fighting at that weight, and even if he can briefly make the weight class, he’s not going to be able to do it for very long because he’s going to keep filling out as he gets older. He literally won’t be able to make 140, if he can even make the weight now. I think he’ll be weight drained if he fights at 140 now, but it’ll get worse for him.

Instead of wasting time trying to go down to a weight class where he’ll have the same problems, Dulorme should look to find a trainer that can teach him some defense because that’s his only chance of improving. He’s got decent power, but he’s not rugged enough to be able to slug it out with the tough welterweights in the division like Marcos Maidana, Keith Thurman, and Abregu.

Those are big guys with excellent power and strong chins. They’d walk through Dulorme’s shots and knock him out unless the guy can learn how to move, and keep from getting hit. Dulorme’s problem is that spent too much time fighting weak scrubs that fell apart when he’d land his shots.

Dulorme quickly picked up a lot of knockouts and he ended up developing bad habits. Instead of working on his defense, Dulorme tried to become a slugger, and he’s not a good enough slugger to be successful against the top guys.
