Image: Should Freddie Roach call it a day?By Mark Calooke: 5 time trainer of the year, Freddie Roach has long been regarded as the best trainer in the world. His gym is world famous and boxers from different counties travel miles to spent their camps there. If you think of all of the champions Roach has had its clear that he has been a huge success. But as a coach he is far from perfect.

Roach has had a dismal year. Back to back loses have left many doubting his ability. The 24/7 series aired to promote Pacquiao vs Marquez was very telling. Freddie admitted that he has been doubting himself and suffering from lack of sleep because of this. I’m not saying he isn’t a good trainer. I have so much respect for him but always feel sorry for him. His Parkinson’s has progressed and this may or may not be a contributor.

His main fighters, Chavez Jr, Khan and Pacquiao have lost 5 fights between them in the last 12 months. You can’t really count the loss to Timothy Bradley. But why did Pacquiao lose last night to a fighter he is much better than? In a fight he was winning. Why did Khan lose to Garcia in a fight he was also winning?

Pacquiao is getting older so that could explain why he is getting hit more often. But Khan is young. Defense shouldn’t be a problem for him. Chavez lost clearly to Martinez but all 5 loses had a common problem which cost the fight. Defense.

I’m not a big fan of blaming trainers but back to back loses for numerous fighters is a concern. And I think it’s too late in the game for Pacquiao to leave for another trainer. I’m sure next year with hold many important fights for the wildcard gym, it will be interesting to see the results. I could be wrong and Roach could have a brilliant 2013. I hope he does.
