Sergio Martinez vs. Martin Murray: A good tune-up for Maravilla

martinez2By Scott Gilfoid: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) has a nice little tune-up bout coming up on April 27th against unbeaten Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11 KO’s) at the Club Atletico Velez Sarsfield, Distrito Federal, Argentina. This is a fight that Martinez is taking to stay busy while he waits on a rematch against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in September next year at the Cowboys Stadium, in Texas.

That’s the big money fight that Martinez is looking forward to, and it’s disappointing that the fight will have to wait until Chavez Jr. finishes serving out his suspension for testing positive last September.

Murray doesn’t bring much to the table in this fight. He’s not a big puncher in any sense, although he will try and mix it up at times when he’s facing a weaker opponent. But for the most part, Murray is a hit and run type of fighter that likes to get a shot or two in before dashing away to keep from getting hit. He’s going to try and make it hard on Martinez by staying on the outside all night because he’ll no doubt realize that he doesn’t have the power or the chin to compete with the much stronger Martinez.

Murray will study Martinez’s past fights against Matthew Macklin and Darren Barker, both of which fought Martinez from the distance with some limited success. Murray’s only real chance in this fight is to keep a lot of distance between him and Martinez because if he tries to fight him he’ll only get knocked out in a big hurray.

The crowd will be against Murray and I think he’s going to be more than a little unnerved by the big show of support for Martinez, who will be fighting with a lot more energy and enthusiasm than he’s been fighting in front of because of the noise that his boxing fans will be making. Martinez hasn’t been fighting in front of huge crowds in the U.S like he’ll be fighting in front of on April 27th in Argentina.
