marcoantoniorubio3By Jason Kim: WBF super middleweight champion Marco Antonio Rubio (55-6-1, 48 KO’s) successfully defended his World Boxing Federation title on Saturday night in stopping Michel Rosales (32-6, 26 KO’s) in the 11th round in a competitive clash at the Bicentennial Gym in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico.

Rubio, 32, knocked Rosales down twice in the fight, once in the 1st, and a final time in the 11th round. Rubio had too much power for the over-matched Rosales.

Rubio is still a very good fighter and it’s unknown why he’s wasting time holding onto a lesser title and defending it against obscure 2nd tier opposition. Rubio should be looking to get a title shot in the middleweight division. He’s too small to compete with the top super middleweights, but if he were to move down in weight he could get another title shot if he were to take some of the contenders in the division.

In other action on the card, flyweight Raul Garcia stopped Samuel Gutierrez (33-9-2, 23 KO’s) in the 3rd round.

Cotto defeats Perez; Seda stops Trejo

Undefeated lightweight Abner Cotto (16-0, 7 KO’s) stayed unbeaten with a 7th round TKO victory over Sergio Perez (27-14, 18 KO’s) earlier tonight at the Coliseo Roger Mendoza in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Cotto knocked Perez down once in the 1st round and battered him in the other rounds in a mostly one-sided fight. Perez failed to come out for the 7th round.

Bantamweight Cesar Seda (24-1, 17 KO’s) destroyed Lorenzo Trejo (31-26-1, 18 KO’s) by a 2nd round knockout in an impressive performance. Trejo was knocked down four times in the fight, three times in the 1st round, and a final time in the 2nd before the fight stopped.

Featherweight Jose Lopez (6-0, 5 KO’s) defeated Eric Gotay (3-1, 1 KO’s) by a 4 round unanimous decision. Gotay was down in the 1st and 4th rounds. The final judges scores were 40-34, 40-34 and 40-34, all for Lopez.
