By Allan Fox: WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero appears to be on the verge of getting a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. that he’s been craving for ages now. Mayweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe revealed that Mayweather Jr. will be fighting on May 4th next on Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican holiday.

Mayweather will so be fighting in September as well, but the May 4th fight makes it pretty obvious that he plans on fighting a Mexican fighter and it’s going to be Guerrero that gets that fight. Saul Alvarez, the WBC 154 pound champion, is supposedly up for consideration for Mayweather, but he’s not going to get it. Mayweather Jr. likely won’t be fighting anymore 154 pound fighters after his hard fight against Miguel Cotto last May.

Guerrero doesn’t have the tools to beat Mayweather because he’s too limited in terms of speed and power. Guerrero should be fighting guys like Kell Brook, Devon Alexander, Marcos Maidana and Mike Jones to determine a winner that would then face Mayweather because Guerrero is going to get massacred by Mayweather.

Mayweather would have almost every advantage you could think of against Guerrero except for youth. Guerrero’s a little younger than Mayweather, but he’s not faster or more powerful. He’s younger but he doesn’t have the speed that younger fighters typically have. The 35-year-old Mayweather is still much faster and accurate than Guerrero.

For the sake of the boxing public, I think it would be better if Guerrero had to fight someone that was good and not coming off of a long layoff to show that he deserves the fight with Mayweather because he doesn’t have the talent right now to be in the same ring with a fighter like Mayweather.

Once Guerrero takes a beating in this fight, it’ll be back to the drawing board for him. He’ll have to go after one of the interim titles again or maybe after the WBA paper champion Paulie Malignaggi. Guerrero might be able to beat him, if someone else doesn’t get to Malignaggi before him.
