pac89By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao getting poleaxed in the 6th round by Juan Manuel Marquez has been selected by readers as the KO of the year for 2012 at RingTV.com. It was a pretty easy choice because it was the perfect shot by Marquez that left Pacquiao out cold on his face with his body looking somewhat like a wooden plank that you’d see on an old pirate ship.

The choices for the KO of the year were as follows:

• Danny Garcia’s 4th round KO of Erik Morales
• Adonis Stevenson’s 1st round KO of Jesus Gonzalez
• Mikkel Kessler’s fourth round KO of Allan Green
• Shinsuke Yamanaka’s 7th round KO of Tomas Rojas

The voting came down to these percentages:

Juan Manuel Marquez KO 6 Manny Pacquiao – 86.7%
Danny Garcia KO 4 Erik Morales – 5.5%
Adonis Stevenson TKO 1 Jesus Gonzalez – 3.2%
Mikkel Kessler KO 4 Allan Green – 2.8%
Shinsuke Yamanaka KO 7 Tomas Rojas – 1.7%

What made Marquez’s knockout of Pacquiao so much better than the rest of the pack was the suddenness and the brutal nature of it. Pacquiao was having a pretty good round at the time, but he then fell into a trap set by Marquez by rushing forward and getting clocked by a tremendous right hand. Marquez was like a tiger waiting for it’s prey. As soon as Pacquiao was in range, Marquez hit him with the shortest, most powerful punch you can imagine a fighter throwing.

Pacquiao, who may have been still a little stunned from his earlier knockdown in the 3rd, never stood a chance. The punch connected with his head, causing his face to contort from the sheer power of the blow and then sending him down to the canvas where he laid for a long time without stirring. It was as if the punch traveled right through Pacquiao’s head and kept going. I can only imagine what it must have done to Pacquiao’s brain inside his skull. The force of the block had to shake his brain up badly, and it’s not surprising that the Filipino was knocked out.
