Pacquiao should dump Roach

pac888By Chris Williams: I think it would be a good idea for Manny Pacquiao to start with a clean slate for his next fight by starting over with an entire new training team to get him ready for his rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez, if Pacquiao insists on taking that fight.

I believe the smartest thing for Pacquiao to do right now would be to take a decisive move and clear out his entire team, including trainer Freddie Roach, assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez and strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza. Pacquiao needs a whole new team if he’s going to come back from the knockout he suffered from Marquez last Saturday night, and that means heads have to role.

Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s adviser, needs to be the guy that tells Pacquiao it’s time to move on with Roach and company and look to get a really high level trainer that can teach him some defense and self-control in the ring. Roach was fine for Pacquiao when he was younger and was like an energizer bunny in the ring, but now that’s he’s losing over and over again, and fighting poor enough to deserve losses, it’s time for a defensive coach.

You can’t have a trainer who’s only idea of winning a fight is to look to become the “Old Manny.” That’s too simplistic, and as we found out last Saturday night, it’s not possible. So what Pacquiao should do is have Koncz come in with a big broom and sweep out the entire team Pacquiao, and then look to get the best trainer, assistant trainer and strength coach that money can buy.

Pacquiao can’t afford another loss right now if he wants to keep his pay per view figures where they’re at right now, so he shouldn’t look for cheap alternatives to Roach. He needs the best guys that he can get, and most importantly he just needs the new blood. It might reinvigorate him so he’s stop losing all the time.
