By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao is all for getting back in the ring and fighting Juan Manuel Marquez for a 5th fight despite being poleaxed by him in their fourth fight. Pacquiao’s mother reportedly wants him to hang up the gloves and retire rather than continue fighting after she saw the knockout.
Pacquiao says he’s willing to fight whoever his promoter wants him to, and that appears to be Marquez. I think Pacquiao is going to get viciously knocked out if he faces Marquez another time. We’ve heard how some fans are saying it was a lucky punch or we’ve also heard Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach try to explain the knockout away by saying it was caused by a shot that Pacquiao didn’t see.
I think it’s more of a case of Pacquiao fighting a guy with bigger power than the guys he’s been facing, and with much better timing and accuracy than what Pacquiao has been facing. Marquez developed his power, and with his counter punching ability he was able to hit Pacquiao when he least suspected it. It would be bad enough to be hit by a fighter with Marquez’s power now as it is, but with his counter punching it makes him a lot more dangerous fighter.
Pacquiao didn’t as sharp last Saturday night, and it’s not because he didn’t train hard. He seemed to be working out really hard in training camp, but he just looked like an older fighter last Saturday. I think his ability to absorb punishment has possibly diminished because he didn’t look at all good in getting dropped by Marquez’s right hand in the 3rd round.
Pacquiao reacted slowly to that shot and was dropped badly on the canvas. You can give Marquez a lot of credit for that shot because he supplied the power and the speed, but Pacquiao looked like he’s lost the ability to take a good shot.
Pacquiao should think about other fights if he does want to continue his career because Marquez is all wrong for him. A lot of boxing fans already feel that Marquez won the three fights with Pacquiao, so you’ve got to figure that Pacquiao will continue to have problems with Marquez if he chooses to fight him again, especially with Marquez’s new power in his shots. It might be a suicidal move on Pacquiao’s part if he chooses to face Marquez again at this point.
