Image: Pacquiao: I can take Marquez’s punchesBy Eric Thomas: Manny Pacquiao figures that if he can take the heavy shots from Antonio Margarito from their fight in 2010, then he can take the hard shots from the smaller Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Pacquiao sees Marquez as a lighter puncher as Margarito, and he thinks he’s going to be able to get the better of him with his superior hand speed.

Pacquiao said to the latimes.com “I can take his [Marquez] punches. I can take the punches of Margarito. I will win with my speed, being more aggressive. I’ve been thinking about how this fight will go since the day I started training.”

If you take a look at the Margarito-Pacquiao fight, you’ll notice that Margarito really didn’t land a lot of punches due to him getting hit so much. He was mostly taking punches in the fight, and after a certain point he stopped throwing of shots because he was getting hammered so badly.

Fighting Marquez is a lot tougher because while he may not hit as hard as Margarito, he’s able to land a more often because he’s faster than him, throws better combinations, picks off shots better, and is able to find Pacquiao a lot more often.

It doesn’t matter much whether Marquez can hit as hard as Margarito, he still punches hard enough to give Pacquiao a lot of problems. It’s not just one punch that Pacquiao will have to worry about tomorrow night. It’s a lot of shots that will be coming his way that could be downfall tomorrow night if he’s not able to come up with an answer to Marquez’s style.

Pacquiao’s speed isn’t any better than it was in his three previous fights, and being aggressive seems to be what Marquez wants Pacquiao to be. He doesn’t want him to fight cautiously. He wants him to attack so he can counter him.
