Mosley: I could beat Marquez

marquez34By Chris Williams: 41-year-old former three vision world champion Shane Mosley (46-1, 39 KO’s) unbelievably thinks he can beat Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KO’s) if the two of them were to fight despite the fact that Mosley hasn’t won a fight in over three years and was easily handled recently by Manny Pacquiao, a fighter that Marquez has arguably beaten four times now.

Mosley said in an interview by esnewsreporting.com when asked if he can beat Marquez “Yes, styles make fights. When you fight a guy like Pacquiao all those times, you learn. Marquez knew when to throw his right hand at the right time.”

Picturing Mosley beating Marquez right now is pretty much impossible for me to really see. In his last four fights, Mosley has had the classic signs of a fighter that you would call shot, as he’s unable to pull the trigger on his punches, and he tends to stop throwing shots after a couple of rounds and just goes into survival mode for the remainder of the fight.

Before the fight he talks as if he’s a good chance but when he goes into the ring it’s like he’s frozen and unable to let his hands go. It was that way in his losses to Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao, Saul Alvarez and in his draw with Sergio Mora.

Marquez would give Mosley a lot of problems with his counter punching and his good power. If Mosley were to somehow find a fountain of youth that would enable him to throw a lot of punches like he used to do in his youth, then he’d have a better chance against Marquez, but still it would be very tough because Marquez would be countering him every step of the way with hard body shots and perfectly timed right hands to the head.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Marquez were to KO Mosley much in the way that Marquez did recently with Pacquiao. He’s become a much better puncher than he used to be, and with his counter punching, he’s able to land shots when his opponents least suspect them and with really good power. Could Mosley handle that kind of power at 41? I don’t know, but I do think Mosley would get beaten and lost a decision at the very least.
