Image: Mayweather feels sorry for PacquiaoBy Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn’t too concerned about the potential loss of his mega fight after seeing Manny Pacquiao get knocked cold last Saturday night against Juan Manuel Marquez in a highly popular pay per view fight on HBO from Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather says he feels sorry for Pacquiao and he hopes okay after being knocked out for close to a minute by a right hand from Marquez in their fourth fight.

Mayweather told fighthype.com “I feel bad for him [Pacquiao] honestly…There’s a difference in how you get knocked out.”

Mayweather went on to say that getting knocked out the way that Pacquiao got knocked out is potentially much more dangerous than a fighter getting knocked out to where they can immediately back up on their own and walk back to their corner. With Pacquiao, he was totally unconscious for about a minute and that’s a dangerous thing because a fighter is in a position where they could be seriously hurt from a knockdown like that.

Mayweather didn’t say whether Pacquiao’s knockout loss will remove him from his list of potential opponents in the future, but if there is still a slight chance of Mayweather and Pacquiao still fighting in the future it could be removed if Pacquiao chooses to fight Marquez again. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum wants to put Pacquiao back in with Marquez for a 5th fight in early 2013. If Pacquiao loses that fight by another knockout, which you have to believe is very possible given how easily Marquez was able to hurt him this time, then it would make it very difficult to imagine a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao being put together. Mayweather is in his mid-30s now and he’s probably not far from losing for the first time, but until that happens he may choose to go after other guys.

Arum should look to make the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight now, and let the Marquez-Pacquiao 5th fight wait until that fight is over with. The interest will still be there in a fifth fight between Marquez and Pacquiao even if Pacquiao loses to Mayweather but you got to make the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight right now while there’s still a bit of interest from boxing fans.
