Image: Marquez hits jackpot with KO of Pacquiao; rematch will make him millionsBy Allan Fox: You have to think of Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KO’s) as someone that just won a huge lottery with his 6th round knockout of boxing star Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada. The victory means a lot more money for Marquez in a rematch with Pacquiao, a lot more than the guaranteed $6 million that he made this time around.

Marquez will make more than the $6 million for this fight after the pay per view upside money comes in, which will likely take Marquez close to $10 million if the fight brings in 1 million PPV buys. In a rematch, Marquez could make much more than that but not as much as Pacquiao.

Marquez may have beaten Pacquiao but Pacquiao remains the huge attraction and the big money maker in this fight. However, Marquez should get a much better deal than last time if he bargains tough with Top Rank, the promoter for Pacquiao.

Marquez wasn’t committing to a rematch when he was asked after the fight last night. He wants to get with his family and think about it before making that move. Of course, he’s going to because the money is just too big to turn down. The only other fighter that could get Marquez the same kind of money is if he were to fight a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr., but there’s not much interest in that fight because of how easily Mayweather beat Marquez in their fight in 2009. Besides that, Mayweather would likely not give Marquez a very good percentage cut of the purse, so it wouldn’t be nearly as good of a deal as a rematch with Pacquiao.

Pacquiao said this when asked about a rematch with Marquez: “Why not? Yes, it’s a good fight. I was just starting to feel confident because I thought I got him. If they give us a chance, we’ll fight again. I’m gonna take rest and then I am coming back to fight.”

Pacquiao has a good attitude for a fighter that was just knocked out badly. A lot of fighters would be ashamed and crawl into a cave to disappear for a long period of time while they licked their mental wounds from the fight, but not Pacquiao. He’s ready to get back in the ring and give it his best shot.
