Marquez has too much power for Pacquiao now; a rematch is a bad idea

marquez564By Chris Williams: I think it’s pointless in Manny Pacquiao fighting Juan Manuel Marquez for a 5th fight. Marquez’s is simply too much for the Filipino now, and it’s only going to be even worse for him next time they fight. Marquez’s punching power and muscle strength has increased dramatically with his strength training and he’s on another level than Pacquiao right now.

We saw what Marquez’s power could do to Pacquiao with him getting knocked out cold in the 6th round, and I think the outcome will be much worse Pacquiao next time they fight.

Before hiring strength and conditioning Coach Angel Heredia, Marquez had always trained in an old fashioned manner by focusing entirely on his boxing training while ignoring ideas about building up his strength through weight lifting and other resistance exercise. Marquez’s body responded really well when he started lifting and he’s quickly become a dangerous puncher with the help of his strength training.

I don’t see Marquez getting that much stronger, because the best gains in strength and muscle often occur soon after a person starts training for the first time. The gains eventually slow down. What we’re seeing here is Marquez’s jump in strength due to him never having done these kinds of exercises for his training, and it’s made huge impact to his power.

Pacquiao could have problems taking heavy shots from now on after his knockout loss to Marquez, and even experienced trainers like Floyd Mayweather Sr., and former two division world champion Bernard Hopkins have serious doubts whether Pacquiao will ever be able to take hard shots again without getting knocked out.

Marquez is going to be looking to put every ounce of strength in his body with looking to connect with powerful head shots when he faces Pacquiao again, because he’ll want to duplicate his efforts from his last fight.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum needs to think hard before he puts Pacquiao back in with Marquez because this isn’t a good idea and it could end up with Pacquiao getting finished as a fighter with another knockout loss. I’d hate to see Pacquiao get knocked out cold, and then Arum not being able to anything with him in terms of future fights.

Another knockout loss for Pacquiao could put him in a position where he’s even getting knocked out by light hitters like Tim Bradley. Arum needs to match Pacquiao carefully after this knockout loss because he doesn’t know how the defeat may have affected him in terms of his ability to take shots.
