macklin54By Scott Gilfoid: Former middleweight title challenger Matthew Macklin is hoping he can get a shot at former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in April next year. Macklin, who is recovering from nose surgery, is expected to be Chavez Jr’s next opponent and Macklin believes he can beat him. Chavez Jr. lost his title to Sergio Martinez last September in a 12 round decision loss, and he’s awaiting his suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for testing positive for marijuana for that fight. However, if the suspension isn’t too long hen a fight between Macklin and Chavez Jr. is a doable fight for April.

Macklin and Chavez Jr. were both beaten by Sergio Martinez. Macklin takes pride in the fact that he gave Martinez overall more problems than Chavez Jr. did in his fight with him before getting knocked out.

Macklin said to the dailymail.co.uk that a fight between him and Chavez Jr. is “80% likely…with Chavez, what you see is what you get…I don’t think I’ll find it too hard to get my shots off. I carry a lot of power so I’m very confident that I can win this fight.”

I don’t give Macklin any chance of beating Chavez Jr. Macklin likes to brawl with his opponents, and that’s the kind of guy that Chavez Jr. does really well against. Chavez Jr. would likely have a huge weight advantage of at least 15 pounds against Macklin, and that would make it really tough for him to be able to compete. The main reason Chavez Jr. had so many problems in losing to Martinez last September was due to Martinez’s movement, hand speed and excellent defensive skills Macklin isn’t fast, and he doesn’t move very well. He’d likely be forced to fight Chavez Jr. in a toe-to-toe battle, and that’s just a smart thing to do. I could see Macklin fighting that way by choice and getting thrashed.
