Everyone that either witnessed or observe the fight between Miguel Cotto and WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout were obviously in for a surprise. Whether you were like me, and believed that Trout would pull out the victory, but he was going to have to dominate being at MSG. Whether you were the latter and believed Cotto’s experience and quality of fighters he has fought would ultimately be his rise and ability to conquer his opposition. We all were wrong!

As true boxing fans and analyst, we should have learned a lot. The first being, which is the most overused quote in boxing that “Every fighter has the possibility to lose by a punch.” I agree with that on only when a fighter that isn’t prepared. As carefully as matches are made today, we the public are rarely surprised. We have to take in all factors, with promotional companies, choice of venue, and ultimately the best interest of the fighter and their boss, not the fans.

Analyze Cotto and Trout.. Cotto, since moving up from welterweight(coming off of his destruction at the hands of Manny Pacquiao!) fighting fighters such as Yuri Foreman, Ricardo Mayorga, and a restructured Antonio Margarito. This was a simple case of a fighter coming off of a devastating loss and rebuilding his career against, one-a paper champion with bad knees, two-a fighter who hasn’t not only fought in two years, but possibly has the worst defense and worst boxing ethic in history(the man smoked cigarettes and drinks coming into the ring!) and 3-a destroyed Margarito at the hands of Pacquiao.

The last fighter being being accused of cheating and hasn’t won a legitimate fight since then. Trout, although no big names on his resume since adding Cotto scalp, yet has the physical build, height, reach, youth, and speed to defeat someone like Cotto. So why as we as the public surprised?! Fact of the matter is Cotto is too small to fight at the Super Welterweight division and only has a chance at competing against the best at welterweight. If he stays at Super Welterweight, be prepared to see your former champion suffer. Trout on the other hand has the build and skill for Super Welterweight, although im not saying he is by far the best at his division. Though he does have more tools to compete at that weight class than Cotto. I look forward to the unification of the Super Welterweight division, though I know other parties will have a say in that.
