Khan’s chances of success in 2013

khan6By William Mackay: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) is hoping to capture a couple of titles in 2013 in a rematch with WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia and then possibly move up in weight to go after the big names at 147.

The Garcia fight is the one that Khan really wants to get, because he’s hoping that a win over Garcia will help him regain his status as the top guy at 140. I don’t think Khan is ready for Garcia yet, and I doubt he’ll get the experience needed to beat him from just two fights working with his new trainer Virgil Hunter.

Khan has been working with Hunter for just the Carlos Molina fight, and in that fight Khan showed only slim improvement on defense. He was still getting hit a lot despite fighting a slow, small and weak guy in Molina. Khan spoke highly of himself after the fight, praising how well he fought and how much his trainer Hunter had changed his game.

There wasn’t much change to Khan’s game from what I could see, and even Danny Garcia said Khan fought pretty much like he usually does.

Garcia didn’t see anything in Khan’s supposedly new style that has him worried in the least. Garcia still says he’ll Khan out. You have to agree because the left hooks that Khan was getting hit with by the light hitting Molina would have been much harder if Garcia were the one throwing them and I don’t think Khan would have been able to take them if Garcia were fighting him on that night.

Khan reportedly only wants to fight a couple of times in 2013, which in that case means he’ll likely win his next fight in April against the likes of Josesito Lopez. But after that fight, Khan will definitely get beat again if he chooses to fight Garcia near the end of the year. Khan will finish 2013 with a 1-1 record, and in even worse shape than he was when he came into the year. Getting beaten once by Garcia is one thing, but getting beaten twice suggests that Khan’s talent is too limited for him to be one of the top stars.
