Khan already looking past his next fight; wants rematch with Garcia

khan34By Scott Gilfoid: As fast and as talented as Amir Khan, he has a bad habit of looking too far off into the future for titles he wants to capture and fighters he wants to take on. Khan is now talking about how he plans on fighting a rematch with his former conqueror WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia AFTER Khan defeats his next opponent in April for a world title.
Khan is assuming he’s going to beat one of the 140 pound champions in April, and then face Garcia in a unification bout after that.

Khan said to the BBC Sport “The next fight is going to be around April time…looking at being in the 140 lb division for world title, and then unifying it with Garcia.”

Khan is looking past his April opponent, as if it’s a victory in the bag. I can’t understand that. I could sort of understand it if Khan hadn’t just beaten a fighter in Carlos Molina who was pulled up from the lightweight division, with no power to speed of and short in height.

Instead of looking past opponents, Khan should be taking one fight at a time and hoping he can actually beat a quality fighter. Heck, he’s lost his last two fights against good competition, and it was only until his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions dug up a 2nd tier fighter with no power or size that he was finally able to stop losing.

Khan needs to put things in perspective. He was failing at the world class level before the Molina fight, and his team pulled back to a lower level for him to get a win, and now he’s looking past his next opponent, who likely won’t be a soft touch.

Honestly, Khan needs more time to work with his new trainer Virgil Hunter because from what I saw of Khan against the light hitting Molina, Khan isn’t different enough to keep from getting knocked out again by Danny Garcia and he’s not improved enough to beat Lamont Peterson in a rematch.

I don’t think Khan could beat other light welterweights like Lucas Matthysse, and I think even Ajose Olusegun would wear him down and take him out. Khan is still getting hit a lot, and the only reason he didn’t get hit more against Molina was because the guy wasn’t going after Khan in the second half of the fight like he was in the first four rounds. If that had been a stronger puncher, four rounds is likely all that would have been needed to knock Khan out.
