Image: Hunter: For Molina to KO Khan, he'll have to put himself in the line of fireBy William Mackay: Virgil Hunter, the trainer for Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s), doesn’t think it’s an easy job for any fighter to knockout Khan despite the fact that Khan has been stopped twice and hurt on a number of occasions in his pro career.

Hunter thinks it takes a really brave fighter to beat Khan because they have to be willing to take his offensive firepower, which Hunter feels is quite formidable. Khan faces Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) on December 15th at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Hunter said to RingTV “Anybody who tries to knock him [Khan] out has eo be willing, like Danny Garcia, to stand there and be in the mouth of the cannon, and be willing to punch with him.”

That’s true but that’s how the sport is. Khan isn’t a huge puncher. He can punch a little, but he’s not a tremendous puncher or even close to it. Khan gets his knockouts with his hand speed because he throws shots that his opponents don’t see, and likes to throw combinations. The combinations lead to knockouts for Khan, but they also cause him to get in trouble because they leave him open for counter shots.

Danny Garcia was able to land a big left hook to the neck of Khan in the 3rd round last July to put him down after Khan left himself open by throwing to throw one of his own big shots. Khan had the same problem in his 1st round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott in 2008. Khan threw a left hook, but Prescott’s left hook got there ahead of his and sent him down.

Molina seems to have a strong chin and he’s pretty fearless. I think he’s going to be willing to stand with his head in the mouth of the cannon because he knows that’s his only chance of winning this fight. He’s not going to be able to outbox the longer-armed and much faster Khan.
