golovkin99By Allan Fox: On January 19th, WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) gets his second chance to impress American boxing fans with his fight against Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The fight will be televised on HBO, and it’s going to be an important fight for Golovkin to quickly pick up boxing fans. The 26-year-old Rosado is the younger guy, and he thinks he can beat Golovkin at his own game by slugging it out with him.

To be sure, Rosado does have very good power in his own right, but he’s going to have to be able to take a lot of big shots from Golovkin in order to win the fight. That’s the problem. Golovkin hits so awfully hard, and with his trainer Abel Sanchez, Golovkin has become a dual threat on the outside as well as the inside.

Golovkin goes to the body like the great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and he’s vicious no matter what you do to try and escape his big power. Golovkin fancies himself as a fighter that can punch in close as well, and it should be interesting to see who imposes their will when the two come together.

Rosado has been fighting at a high level for the past couple of years since getting beaten in 2010 by a narrow decision. He’s in the prime of his career and fighting better than he ever has in the past, but he’s going to need to come up with a game plan that can somehow neutralize the power of Golovkin.

The question in this fight is whether Rosado, who is moving up in weight, can handle getting hit by the harder shots from Golovkin. Rosado is not only moving up in weight but he’s moving against arguably the biggest puncher in the division in Golovkin.
