Fury: Vitali is an old man; he will not fight me

By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight contender Tyson Fury was getting a little lippy after beating Kevin Johnson last Saturday night by a 12 round unanimous decision in going in a rant about WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko possibly not wanting to give him a title shot before he retires.

Fury said this about Vitali as quoted by Boxrec.com “Vitali is an old man, 41 or 42 year old, he aint the same Vitali that fought Kevin Johnson. Derek Chisora – a journeyman, took him and pushed him close…Anyone with a pair of eyes can see that Vitali is on his way down now. He will not fight me – he will hang his gloves up first.”

Fury went onto say that he wants to fight Vitali or his brother Wladimir Klitschko.

I think Fury would be knocked out by Vitali and of course not knocked out by Wladimir if he were to fight them. Fury can beat guys like Johnson, Vinny Maddalone and Dereck Chisora, but he can’t beat the Klitschkos. Fury’s fight against Johnson showed clearly why he wouldn’t be able to hang with Vitali due to Fury’s lack of power. For him to land all those slapping punches against Vitali, Fury would have to take a lot of hard power shots to the head, and I don’t see him being able to take them. He’d go down and once he got up, Vitali would finish him off.

The fight that Fury needs to be making is against fellow Brit David Price. That’s a fight that British boxing fans want to see and it’s one that will make Fury the best money he can get. He won’t $1 million to face the Klitschkos, even if he could get that fight.

I suspect Vitali may retire, but if he doesn’t he’ll look to fight the popular David Haye instead of Fury. Vitali has sense enough to realize that there’s not huge money in fighting the likes of Fury because he’s not a huge star in the UK, and he’s totally unknown in Germany and the United States aside from with the hardcore boxing fans.
