Deontay Wilder wants Bryant Jennings for next fight

wilder213By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight superstar on the rise Deontay Wilder (26-0, 26 KO’s) is looking for his next victim after easily dispatching 6’7” Kelvin Price (13-1, 6 KO’s) with a single right hand shot to the head that knocked him out in the 3rd round last Saturday night in front of a large national television audience in the U.S on Showtime at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California.

It was a good finish to what had been an unusually reserved performance from the young 27-year-old Wilder, but that’s why he’s so special. He’s got tremendous power that he holds in reserve and even if he’s not looking good, he can make up for his mistakes with a single shot to the head.

After the fight, Wilder was asked who he’d like to take on next and he said as quoted by RingTV “I want Bryant Jennings.”

I think that would be a good fight. Jennings is a pretty well developed heavyweight with mad boxing skills, great work rate, and unusually long arms. He’s only 6’2”, yet he’s got a longer reach than the 6’6” Wladimir Klitschko. Wilder and Jennings both have identical reach of 84”. However, the difference in power is huge. Jennings is no puncher, and he would have major problems with Wilder, because he would have to take so many big shots from the 6’7” Wilder, and I just don’t see him being able to take Wilder’s big shots.

Wilder is one of those special talents that doesn’t get motivated until his opponent has hit him. Last night Price hit Wilder with a right hand after bum rushing him in the 3rd, and immediately after that, Wilder hit Price with two powerful right hands while in a clinch with him. Most fighters aren’t able to generate a lot of power when punching someone while that close, but you could see Price was hurt from those two big shots, because he seemed to wobble.

Price then backed up and Wilder came steaming at him like a locomotive under full power and tagged him with a peach of a right hand that knocked Price down and the fight was stopped. If Wilder were to fight Jennings it would be a similar fight. Jennings would look good for a little while with his nice combination punching, but then Wilder drop a bomb on him and the fight would be over from a single punch. That’s what makes Wilder so special.
