DeGale defeats Zuniga; Eubank Jr. stops Fedotovs
By Scott Gilfoid: James DeGale (14-1, 9 KO’s) won a fairly easy 12 round unanimous decision tonight over 35-year-old Fulgencio Zuniga (25-7-1, 22 KO’s) in a plodding performance to capture the vacant WBC Silver super middleweight title at the Bonus Arena, Hull, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
The final judges’ scores were 118-109, 118-109 and 118-109. DeGale was hit a lot in the fight, and he didn’t show the movement that he’s been talking about wanting to show in this fight. Zuniga was able to find DeGale often with his big power shots, but DeGale took them answered back with a lot of slapping shots.
It wasn’t a great performance by DeGale but he got the World Boxing Council Silver 168 lb strap.
DeGale needs help in the power department in a big way, and he also needs to work on his wheels because he’s just a plodder. That’s not going to get the job done when he steps it up for a world title in 2013 or 2014. I’d hate to see DeGale get beaten again.
Other results on the card:
Chris Eubank Jr TKO 2 Olegs Fedotovs
Kid Galahad TKO 4 Ivan Ruiz Morote
