Danny Garcia interested in rematch with Khan

garcia56By William Mackay: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia says he’s up for a rematch with former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan after watching him defeat Carlos Molina last night by a 10th round TKO in Los Angeles, California. Khan called Garcia out after the fight, saying he’d be willing to fight him “Anytime, anyplace.” Khan also claimed that his knockout loss to Garcia was due to Garcia getting “lucky.”

Garcia said to Sky Sports News “It’s up to what Golden Boy wants because I can say ‘yeah, let’s go do it’ but really I have no control over it…If everything is right we can do it.”
It doesn’t seem likely that Golden Boy will let Khan fight Garcia again if you’re to read the tea leaves from what Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy said after the fight.

Schaefer said Khan didn’t necessarily need the Garcia fight because “there are a lot of other fights out there for him.” Schaefer also pointed out that Garcia is fighting Zab Judah in February and Schaefer wants to put Khan back in the ring in April, so that right there makes it impossible for Khan and Garcia to fight next. But it’s likely that Schaefer won’t put Khan back in with Garcia at all next year and perhaps even the year after.

Golden Boy wants to make a pay per view star out of Khan and if they keep putting him in with guys that can punch like Garcia, he’ll just keep getting knocked out and he’ll never get there. Golden Boy is going to do what was done with Khan after he was knocked out by Breidis Prescott in 2008. Khan was then matched against 5 non-punchers and he was able to pick up the WBA light welterweight title against a non-puncher in Andriy Kotelnik.

Khan wasn’t put in with another puncher until 2 years later when he was in the position where he had to defend his title against his mandatory challenger Marcos Maidana. Khan barely survived that fight after getting badly hurt in the 10th round by Maidana. After the Maidana fight, Khan was put in with light punchers until his fight with Garcia and he was promptly knocked out again.

Golden Boy will have to steer Khan in the direction of IBF champion Lamont Peterson if they want to try and get him a belt at 140. They could wait for WBO champion Juan Manuel Marquez to vacate his 140 pound title, because he’s not going to fight someone like Khan for chump change with the big money that he’s getting for his fights with Manny Pacquiao.
