Cotto needs to think before accepting Canelo fight

Image: Cotto needs to think before accepting Canelo fightBy Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) says he’s going to go on vacation with his family and think about which direction to go in for his next fight. His promoters at Golden Boy Promotions have already tipped their hand to where they’re going to push Cotto next by looking to make a between him and the 22-year-old WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next May on Cinco de Mayo.

It’ll be no doubt a pay per view bout and because of the Mexican holiday, Cotto-Alvarez could bring in fairly big numbers in terms of the buy rate. If Cotto is looking to cash out with his career then this is his chance because it’s the best money he can probably get right now unless Bob Arum offers him a rematch against Manny Pacquiao before that.

I don’t see that happening now because Arum is already thinking of matching Pacquiao up against Brandon Rios next April, so a Pacquiao-Cotto rematch would have to wait until at least September or October next year.

With the way that Cotto looked against Trout, I’d advise against him taking a fight with Alvarez fight now. I think the timing is terrible. Cotto has lost his last two fights and didn’t look good in losing to Trout. Unless Cotto really needs the money, he should tell Golden Boy that he’s not interested in Alvarez right now.

Unless Cotto can get an offer for a Pacquiao bout, he should just look to get in a confidence boosting fight against either a welterweight or a beatable junior middleweight contender. He’s probably not going to wise up and move back down to welterweight where he won’t be at such a disadvantage due to his lack of size, so in that case Cotto needs a junior middleweight that’s not big like Trout.

A good fight for Cotto would be against the likes of Carlos Molina, Sergiy Dzinziruk or Cory Spinks. One of those guys. I know Cotto just wants the big money fights but he needs to look at how his career is starting to sink now. He needs to build his confidence back up while he waits for a big money fight against Pacquiao, if he can still get that fight. Forget the small money that a Canelo-Cotto fight would generate. Cotto needs Pacquiao and then he should either retire, move down to welterweight or cash out against Canelo. One of those options is definitely what Cotto should do.
