Carson Jones vs. Dean Byrne on Saturday night in London

By Scott Gilfoid: Welterweight contender Carson Jones (34-9-2, 24 KO’s) will be fighting replacement opponent Dean Byrne (16-2, 6 KO’s) on Saturday night in a scheduled 8 round bout at the Olympia, Kensington, in London, United Kingdom.

Jones, 26, was supposed to be fighting British fringe contender Lee Purdy on this card, but he had to pull out of the fight after getting injured in a car accident.

Instead of shelving the whole idea of having the American Jones on the card, a replacement opponent was found by Matchroom Sport in the form of 28-year-old Byrne. This is an even worse mismatch than the original Jones-Purdy was shapping up to be, because Byrne is nowhere near the same level as the talented Jones, and he’s 2 out of his last 3 fights.

What’s the point in having Jones even fight on this card if they’re not going to at least get him a good opponent to fight? I wish there was someone else they could drag out there. What’s Matthew Hatton doing? They should have pulled him in there for the fight with Jones. I mean, it would be a mismatch just like the Purdy vs. Jones fight, but at least it would get the attention of some boxing fans due to Hatton’s last name.

The main event on this card is Darren Barker vs. Kerry Hope. Some main event, eh? Barker hasn’t fought in a year since getting stopped by Sergio Martinez, and Hope was recently stopped by Grzegorz Proksa.

I love what they’re calling this card – the “Christmas Cracker.” What a laugh. There’s not much to it other than the Barker-Hope fight, which I’m not excited about. I don’t know how you can call the Jones-Byrne fight an interesting match-up because it’s one-sided as well. The rest of the fighters aren’t big names and it appears to be a lot of mismatches.
