marquez56By Chris Bax:  IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch and Juan Manuel Marquez scooped the 2 main awards in the boxrec news awards. Froch won the fighter of the year category and Marquez won international fighter of the year.

Lets start with Froch. Following on from his clear points defeat too Andre ward at the end of 2011, Froch faced the previously unbeaten Lucian Bute for his IBF super middleweight world championship in may 2012. Froch dominated Bute in a one sides beating and stopped him in 6 rounds. A great performance from Froch coming off such a clear loss to ward to dominate the favourite Bute.

Froch then followed that performance with a 3 round demolition job of American Yusaf Mack in November. In all honesty Mack was very over matched and Froch dominated him for all 3 rounds until he dropped him with a body shot and it was all over. All in all a great year for Froch and a great 2013 in store, possibility of rematches with Mikel Kessler and Andre ward on the horizon.

Now on to “Dinamita” Juan Manuel Marquez, who certainly lived up to his nick Name im his last bout in 2012. A great year for Marquez with 2 wins in 2012 against Serhiy Fedchenko in April, and a devastating one punch knock out of Manny Pacquiao in December. Marquez ended 2011 with a controversial loss to Pacquiao so the destruction of him this December with that stunning knock out was even more the sweeter for Marquez. A great year for the Mexican warrior and big money fights to look forward to in 2013, a 5th fight with Pacquiao maybe or a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

Other winners in the boxrec news awards were; Kal Yafai who won young fighter of the year. Nicola Adams who won team gb’s best Olympian for her gold medal performance in London 2012.  Upset of the year was WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia’s 4th round knock out of Amir Khan and domestic fight of the year was Derry Mathews upset win over Anthony Crolla.

A great 2012, plenty of great action domestically and internationally this year and 2013 promises to be more of the same. Have a great new year boxing fans.
