Image: Canelo wants Mayweather bout; Trout the backup planBy Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez says his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions are currently in negotiations with Floyd Mayweather Jr. to try and put together a fight between him and Canelo in early 2013, according to The Record. Canelo wants to try and make the Mayweather fight happen before looking at alternative bouts. The Mayweather fight is the #1 goal for Alvarez right now. However, if that fight can’t get made, Alvarez will be looking to face Austin Trout on May 4th.

Canelo said to the record.com.mx “Trout is a great fighter, undefeated and he came in and beat Cotto. He’s left handed, and very stronger. He would be fine for next May.”

However, Canelo wants the Mayweather fight first and foremost and he’s going to try his utmost to make that fight happen. There’s already a big problem that could derail a Mayweather-Canelo fight from taking place right off the bat, and that’s Mayweather’s desire to fight in February.

That’s not when Canelo wants to fight next, as he plans on fighting on May 4th, the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo. He wants to take advantage of all the Mexicans that will be celebrating the holiday on that date knowing that a lot of them would be eager to purchase a Mayweather vs. Canelo fight on PPV in significant numbers.

Canelo is worried that if Mayweather fights in February and then tries to fight again in May against him, the fight could be cancelled if Mayweather suffers a cut during his February fight. Canelo has already seen two of his potential PPV fights go down the drain with the losses of Victor Ortiz and Cotto. He doesn’t want to miss out on a Mayweather fight as well.

It does make a lot of sense for Canelo and Mayweather to fight on Cinco de Mayo, because that’s how they would maximize the amount of money that can be made on PPV. However, you have to wonder whether Mayweather is really serious about wanting to fight Canelo if he’s talking about fighting in February. I think it’s hard to believe that Mayweather would fight in February and then turn around and fight in May. That’s not something that I can see a 35-year-old Mayweather doing at this stage in his career.
