Image: Canelo thinks he’ll get Mayweather fight on May 4thBy Chris Williams: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) said earlier tonight that he is “Close” to getting a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4th, the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo. Mayweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe recently revealed that Mayweather will be fighting on May 4th, and it was thought that either Canelo or Robert Guerrero would get the fight on that date.

Recently, there were rumors that Guerrero will be the guy that Mayweather chooses. However, with Canelo now saying that a fight with Mayweather Jr. is close for May 4th, it’s hard to know what to think.

If Mayweather’s angle was to make the most money then Canelo is definitely the way to go because he’s a much bigger star than Guerrero in the Mexican community. Canelo still isn’t all that well known among casual boxing fans in the United States, though, because he’s only has a handful of fights on HBO and most of them have been against smaller and older guys.

Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Canelo, obviously haven’t been in a rush to put him in with a fighter that’s really good because he’s incredibly easy to hit, he fights flat-footed and he doesn’t seem to be able to handle movement too well. The guys that they’ve put in with him have been either stationary guys that didn’t move or ones that came right at him but without the size, youth and power to really test him.

I don’t see Mayweather agreeing to fight Canelo on May 4th, I really don’t. Canelo might want that fight, but I don’t see him getting it. The Guerrero fight is easy money for Mayweather and it makes sense to take that fight next before fighting Canelo, if he wants to take that fight.

Mayweather beat Miguel Cotto by a 12 round decision last May to take his World Boxing Association 154 pound title in a fight that was one of the toughest of Mayweather’s career because he chose to stand and slug with Cotto instead of boxing him.

For Mayweather to beat Canelo, he’ll have to move around the ring and use his skills because he might not be able to beat the young 22-year-old by going toe-to-toe.
