broner555By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) will be fighting on the May 4th undercard fight of unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Neither Broner nor Mayweather have opponents picked out for their fights, but it’s been reported that Mayweather could be facing WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero.

Broner’s opponent isn’t known, but his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions will likely try and match him up against WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns, if they can get him to agree to take the fight.

Burns said no to a fight with Broner on February 16th of next year, so you’d have to expect that we may hear something similar from Burns for May as well. Burns has already had the opportunity to fight Broner on two occasions, and both times he opted not to for some reason.

Broner will reportedly be shown on Mayweather’s 24/7 episodes on HBO to help market Mayweather’s May 4th fight on HBO pay per view. Having Broner in front of the camera at times will really help make him a star, and so will fighting on the undercard of Mayweather’s fight.

WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez may wind up on the Mayweather undercard as well, presumably as the co-main event. This no doubt would be done in the hopes of getting boxing fans interested in a potential future match-up between Alvarez and Mayweather. Golden Boy has made no secret to the fact that they BADLY want to match Alvarez against Mayweather. However, Mayweather isn’t in any kind of hurry, so that fight may not happen for a while yet.

If Broner, Alvarez and Mayweather end up on the same fight card it’s going to bring in huge PPV numbers because Alvarez is a tremendous draw, Broner is has bringing in big numbers in his HBO ratings, and Mayweather of course is #1 in the ratings and PPV numbers.

Broner has a fight on February 16th against possibly Gavin Rees, and if Broner suffers a cut or some kind of injury in that fight, it’ll likely wipe out his chance to fight on the Mayweather undercard. That’s less than three months turnaround time for Broner, and it might not long enough for any nicks and scratches he gets from the Rees fight to heal before he’s put in the ring again.
